Call of Duty's first attempt at a battle royale game wasn't Warzone. Although it was massively successful, the first battle royale in the Call of Duty series came with Black Ops 4, and the mode was called "Blackout." Recently, as Black Ops 4 reached its sixth anniversary, @TheWarzoneIntel took to X to ask Call of Duty fans what they thought about Blackout. Needless to say, the community had a thought or two to share.

One comment by @G5ToxicKing on the post read:

"Still better than Warzone".

According to them, Blackout, despite being six years old, is better than Warzone.

More fans joined the discussion to share their opinions on the map. A user named @Fps_Dropkick said:

"Without Blackout, Warzone would not exist today and Blackout was by far the best CoD BR to date they did something at the time I talked mad s**t about it saying it’s just going to be…and essentially I was just describing what Warzone is now and it turned out I was wrong. Blackout is more of a BR than Warzone is and it’s not even close".

They mentioned that there would have been no Warzone without Blackout. According to them, it is the best Call of Duty battle royale game to date despite having complained about the mode when it first came out.

However, their complaints back then seemed like they were describing WZ, and they accepted that their claims were wrong. Finally, they state that Blackout was a better battle royale game than WZ and that the former comes out on top by a huge margin.

The community shared similar sentiments about Blackout, as reflected in @100HP_CurtyB's comment:

"1000% better. No loadouts just use what you find. Higher skill gap. Map was top tier."

According to them, Blackout was "1000%" better than Warzone. They claimed that the absence of loadouts and the requirement of players to find the guns manually was what made it a better battle royale game. They further added that this resulted in a higher skill gap between newcomers and veterans. They praised the Blackout map, one of the largest battle royale maps in the history of the series.

While most of the comments compared WZ to Blackout, a fan compared the latter to other games in the genre. Here's what @RaketeOriginal had to say:

"Blackout was the best BR after OG PUBG."

They mention that Blackout from Black Ops 4 was, in fact, the best royale game at that time and second only to PUBG, which was pretty huge back in the day and inspired many similar games.

But the comparisons didn't end there, as fans compared Blackout to the modes that are currently available in the games. Here's what @RowleyTylerB commented:

"Blackout was 100% the best Call of Duty experience they ever made incomparably better than Warzone, DMZ, and Multiplayer. DMZ was good for season 1 or 2 and then they neutered it and ruined it. Hoping for a more hardcore yet still Call of Duty experience like Blackout offered."

They mentioned that Blackout provided the best Call of Duty experience and that it was better than Battle Royale, DMZ, and the Multiplayer experience offered in current-gen games.

They added that DMZ was fun for the first two seasons before Call of Duty decided to stop working on it extensively, causing the mode to eventually deteriorate in quality. They remained hopeful about a game mode that is Call of Duty-like and hardcore, just like Blackout was back in the day.

The support for the battle royale mode from Black Ops 4 didn't end there. A user, @Cuban370z, said the following:

"Yes, Blackout was infinitely better and it was closer resembling Apex Legends, PUBG, etc. Warzone is boring and stale cause everyone runs the same meta stuff. Blackout was more challenging and unique. It's a shame there wasn't more Blackout support."

They stated that the battle royale experience in Blackout was much better than what WZ is and can be compared to games like Apex Legends and PUBG, which offer some of the best battle royale experiences to date. They claim that the current-gen BR title is stale and everyone uses what the current weapon meta is, closing the skill gap by a big margin and taking away the challenging gameplay.

Finally, they mention that is a "shame" that Blackout didn't receive the support it deserved.

Call of Duty fans take a retrospective look at Blackout in the era of Warzone

In the era of Warzone, Call of Duty fans haven't forgotten Blackout, the first-ever battle royale game from the series. While most claimed the mode is better than Warzone, others give it a spot among the best battle royale titles ever made.

Despite being over six years old, Call of Duty players still appear to love the game, as reflected by their comments.
