Citadelle des Morts in Black Ops 6 Zombies is an ancient site littered with vintage buildings that bring out a medieval feel. The castle in the town was first established in the 1100s; however, its recorded history spans back to 750 A.D.

750 A.D.

Known as Abbaye des Oubliés or The Abbey of the Forgotten at this point, Citadelle des Morts in Black Ops 6 Zombies served as a leprosarium — a hospital for people suffering from leprosy. At the time, the sick were taken care of by a Benedictine monastic order.

The recorded history of the town then takes players to 1137 – 1220 A.D., when the place was known as Citadelle de la Reine or Queen's Citadel. It owes this name to Adelaide of Murienne, the then queen of France who began the construction of a keep on the site of the Abbey.

A village soon began forming on the outskirts of this keep. The artisans building the keep stayed on and built their own homes here. The construction ended in 1220 A.D.

1314 A.D.

This was when the Citadelle des Morts in Black Ops 6 Zombies entered an interesting period of history. The reign of the famous King Arthur had just ended and Jacques du Molay, the last Grandmaster of the Knights Templar, was burned at the stake in Paris for heresy.

A few surviving members of the order ran and hid powerful artifacts in Citadelle des Morts. Unfortunately, what these artifacts are, what they can do, and who used to own them, have all been redacted from the history of this ancient town. However, these items certainly hold great power. Perhaps, even a Sentinel's Artifact.

1533 A.D.

In 1533 A.D., Avalon was declared a free state, and the French Syndicate took over the administration of the town. The powerful family brought Citadelle des Morts under its thumb.

World War II impacted Citadelle des Morts in Black Ops 6 even though the Principality of Avalon remained neutral. Off-shoot and off-target bombers ended up destroying parts of the town and the castle, damaging internal chambers and leaving parts in ruins.

Current day

In the game's present, Citadelle des Morts in Black Ops 6 serves as a site for the French Syndicate to run its illegal operations from the shadows. From smuggling to manufacturing narcotics, the town provides shelter to every illicit criminal activity imaginable.

Criminals are not even the only problem as the town is also overrun by hordes of zombies and a new monster known only as the Doppleghast.

This was the history of Citadelle des Morts in Black Ops 6 as provided by Activision in the most recent Call of Duty Season 1 Reloaded blog ahead of the map's release on December 5, 2024.
