According to a report, Call of Duty's battle royale hasn't changed and internally, it's still considered Warzone 2. A leaker shared a data mine report of the game, which mentioned it hasn't been updated internally by devs, and on paper, it still kept the name as it did back in 2022. For all newcomers to the franchise, Warzone 2 was initially launched in 2022. However, in 2023, it was renamed to Warzone officially.
Since then, every iteration of the game that got integrated with the main release was considered a successor. For instance, with Modern Warfare 3 (2023), players deemed the battle royale game as Warzone 3. Similarly, the latest integration of the shooter with Black Ops 6 led fans to believe it is called Warzone 4.
But @CODWarfareForum shared on X that it doesn't seem to be the case and they stated,
"Makes me laugh when people say the current Warzone is 3 or 4. We haven't even left 2 yet, they just removed the numbers and updated the game to remove IW c**p."
Read on to learn more about the report and when Warzone 3 might actually be released.

CoD fans are reportedly still playing Warzone 2 and next major iteration is still far off
As mentioned, @CODWarfareForum said Call of Duty fans are still playing Warzone 2, and not WZ 3 or 4. This revelation is based on a datamine that shows numerous lines of code. The user who posted it discussed that the report is evidence of the fact that WZ 3 is far from release.
They go on to claim that the true successor of the battle royale shooter will be released alongside Infinity Ward's next major installment which is reportedly to be launched in 2026.

In the post, it was shown that Call of Duty 2026 is codenamed Rex, and the next integration of the battle royale shooter with COD 2026, would truly mark an actual leap, which has been titled "wz3" or "wzrex" internally.
This implies we aren't getting a true successor to the battle royale even with 2025's Call of Duty entry, reportedly a sequel to Black Ops 2. They also added that although the 2026 version of the battle royale will be WZ 3, they don't think Call of Duty will push for a rename.
Instead, they would make changes moving forward to the game's mechanics and visuals, which @CODWarfareForum described as a "skin wipe."
That covers everything you need to know about the next true iteration of Call of Duty's battle royale game.
