The Season 6 update in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 marks the return of the Mutation mode. Last seen during the Season 4 Reloaded update back in June, this mode splits the players into two teams of human operators and mutants. The Mutation mode offered a fresh experience for gamers, combining human combat with mutant abilities.
This article will dive into details regarding the Mutation mode in Modern Warfare 3.
Mutation mode in MW3 explained
Both the human operators and mutants have their own set of unique abilities and strategies to outclass the opposing team. At the start of the game, the two teams battle each other for two rounds. They even switch roles from the third round, while the side with the most points at the end is declared the winner.

Do note that these mutants should not be confused with zombies. They have a string of different abilities that make them quite different. On the other hand, the Human operators spawn with extra ammo and can earn kill streaks throughout a match.

What are Mutant classes in the Mutation Mode?
Instead of following the traditional loadouts, the mutants can choose from four different classes, each with their own set of abilities:
- Mutated Leaper: This hyper-agile mutant is capable of leaping toward enemies and entering a rage mode that increases movement speed and melee damage. They can also detect enemies around corners and toss a snapshot grenade to reveal them to their teammates. The Mutated Leaper is great for close combat and surprising enemies.
- Radioactive Beast: This is a half-dog, half-demon creature that can charge towards enemies with brutal force. They can howl to increase the health and movement speed of allies while using enhanced senses to detect nearby foes on the minimap. This mutant is ideal for breaking enemy lines.
- Contaminated Sludger: This mutant specializes in area denial, using a smoke grenade to obscure vision and attacking with a devastating acid blast at close range. They can also leave behind acid pools that slow down enemies and, upon death, explode into mutant sludge to take down surrounding foes. Naturally, this mutant is perfect for disrupting enemy movements.
- Camouflaged Sneaker: This mutant is partially invisible and is armed with an energy projectile to slow down enemies. They use an electrified leap to ambush opponents after breaking their stealth and are perfect for surprise tactics.
Mutants who have a high number of kills are also rewarded with the chance to transform into the Mutant Juggernaut, a monstrous, unstoppable force that can dominate the battlefield.
