In 2012's Black Ops 2 Campaign, the franchise witnessed one of the most tragic deaths of a beloved character. As much as the game is known for its excellent single-player narrative experience, it's also remembered for—what one can describe as—the most shocking twist in a Call of Duty title's storyline.
Black Ops 2 saw the unfortunate fate of Alex Mason who was shot dead by one of his close friends, Frank Woods. But what was the reason behind Woods killing him? Keep reading for a brief explanation of what went down in one of Call of Duty's most tragic moments.
How did Alex Mason die in Black Ops 2?
During the Campaign of Black Ops 2, Alex Mason, Frank Woods, and Jason Hudson had engaged with the main villain Raul Menendez's cartel members. While taking them down, Mason found a CIA memo which was proof of there being a mole of Menendez in the CIA.
While continuing their search, Mason and Woods entered a room at the same time as Menendez. Josefina, Menendez's sister, was also inside the room. At this moment, Woods tried to kill Raul Menendez but Mason stopped him. Eventually, Woods threw a grenade which bounced into the room and killed Josefina. Woods and Mason believed that the grenade also killed Raul but it wasn't the case; he survived with the help of Noriega.
Later in the story of Black Ops 2, Mason and Woods decided to capture Noriega. Throughout this mission, they both tried to contact Jason Hudson but didn't get any response. After destroying Noriega's jet, Mason finally received crucial intel from Hudson about Noriega's location. The duo then reached the location and managed to capture Noriega.
Mason and Woods then received another piece of information from Hudson. He told them that Noriega was to be escorted to a US Army checkpoint where he would offer information on a Nexus target.
Mason and Woods succeeded in completing this objective but they didn't know it was all part of Menendez's plan. Mason got split up from Woods and was captured by Noriega's men who put a bag over his head. On the other hand, Woods had the intel from Hudson according to which the bagged individual was the Nexus target. Woods was told that the Nexus target was Raul Menendez and proceeded to shoot.
Later, Woods realized that the person he shot was actually Mason. But it was too late and he could not do anything. Woods was then shot on both knees by Menendez.

Menendez then took Mason and Woods to a place where he had already kept Hudson (who was forced by Menendez to provide false intel to Mason and Woods in the first place). Menendez eventually killed Hudson as well in front of Woods who was allowed to live with the guilt of killing his friend Mason.
