"Would the PC community disappear?": Warzone fans speculate Activision turning off cross-play on consoles

Since the release of Call of Duty Warzone in 2020, fans have been complaining about cheaters on PCs. Furthermore, the game doesn't allow console users to turn off cross-play and have their own lobbies. Hence, users on consoles are pitted against those on PCs, which raises their chances of coming across cheaters.

As a result, console players have been asking for a feature to turn off cross-play for a long time.

On a thread in r/CODWarzone, u/No_Accountant2173 raised the question:

"If Activision allowed console players to turn off cross-play, would the PC community disappear?"

This question caused a debate among the Warzone fanbase. While some sided with the OP, others disagreed.

One user named PhantomApples stated:

"Nope. On account of lack of other games that are similar."

While there are battle royale games like Apex Legends, PUBG, etc., they don't cater to the Warzone audience. Although, in my opinion, Warzone is in a terrible state, it is still unique and players keep coming back to it.

A user stated that they deleted this game, but they returned, and, by their own admission, the title is like a "drug".

u/OnewordTTV agreed with the previous comment and stated:

"Yup exactly. There is no other BR like this. I don't want abilities and stuff. I want this but better. And no one has."

That said, given Warzone's current state, it won't be surprising if some players don't return to the game. u/StructureFuzzy8174 commented:

"I stopped a few months ago and have had 0 desire to pick it back up. It sounds like they haven’t fixed the lag, cheating, audio, or ridiculous SBMM yet either (but I bet they’ve released 50 new bundles since then). The game is a lazy cash grab at this point."

While the debate still continues, a question eventually arises as to whether PCs have more players than consoles in Warzone, and whether they are enough to keep the game running on the platform if Activision disabled cross-play.

Are there more PC players than consoles in Warzone right now?

Based on ex-Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick's, answer, Call of Duty has seen exponential growth in PC users after 2019 and, right now, the game has more players on PCs than on consoles.

In the same thread, u/zhubaohi answered the question:

"If you are asking this question pre 2019, the answer is yes. PC on COD is always dead after a year. But it's 2024 now. more than 1/3 of the COD player base is actually on PC now. So if they suddenly disable crossplay, I don't see PC dying."

That said, the cheating issue on PCs is real, and players have been complaining about this for a while.
