Tata Steel and Chess Federation for the physically disabled are all set to host the fourth All India FIDE-rated specially-abled Chess Championship 2024 at the JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand from June 24 to 28.
The previous edition of the competition was held in 2022, with Karnataka’s Samarth J Rao emerging as the winner.
The competition is all set to be a nine-round classical affair and a total of 64 of India's best specially abled chess players from 14 states will be taking part. The time control will be 60 minutes and a 30-second increment starting from move one.
The tournament will be organized by Tata Steel Limited and Tata Steel Foundation with the support of the Chess Federation for the physically disabled.
This competition aims to provide an ideal platform for chess players with disabilities across different states of India to display their impressive talent and passion for the game.
4th All India FIDE-rated specially-abled Chess Championship to reward the champion with ₹25,000
The tournament Champion (Open section, including players with Locomotor Disabilities, Deaf, and Dumb) will receive a cash prize of ₹25,000. Other categories include Wheel Chair, Unrated, Women, U19 Junior Open, and Girls.
Naveen Kumar A, the top seed, finished at the second spot in the previous edition. Notably, Naveen represented India and secured the Bronze medal in the FIDE Olympiad for People with Disabilities in 2023.
Venkata Krishna Karthik, with a rating of 1889, entered the tournament as the second seed. The defending champion Samarth J Rao, is the third seed of the competition with a rating of 1770.
This tournament follows the successful hosting of the Tata Steel Asian Junior Open and Girls Chess Championship 2023, held at the same venue in 2023.
Tata Steel’s Chess mascot, “Hati,” the symbol of strategy and wisdom, will continue to motivate the competitors to strategize, move decisively, and embrace sportsmanship.
The opening ceremony of the Chess Championship is scheduled to take place on the evening of June 24, Monday. On June 25, three rounds of Chess will be played, followed by two rounds each for the next three days.
