Former world champion Magnus Carlsen has reached Kolkata ahead of the sixth edition of the Tata Steel Chess Open 2024. Carlsen arrived at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport today (November 12) around noon time. The Norwegian grandmaster is all set to make his second appearance at the iconic tournament.
In a post by Tata Steel Chess India on X (formerly Twitter), Carlsen was seen being greeted with garlands in a traditional welcome. Post the ceremonial reception, the ace player then proceeded to play a bit of chess with some young players. He was all smiles while interacting with those present.

The World No.1 Magnus Carlsen has raised the excitement of his fans given his return to the competition after a lengthy period. It is after four years that he will be seen in action at the said event.
His first appearance came during the first edition in 2019, in which he won the coveted title. The upcoming edition will be played at the Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in Kolkata from November 13 to 17.

Magnus Carlsen will be seen playing amongst some of the biggest chess stars from around the world. World No. 2 Arjun Erigaisi, Daniil Dubov and Women's World No. 5 Koneru Humpy will all be a part of the star-studded lineup.
Indian legend Viswanathan Anand will be seen representing the tournament as its ambassador. Much like all previous editions, the event will have both the Open and Women's category. The tournament will be played in the rapid and blitz format, with the prize money being equal for both categories.
The Rapid rounds will be played from November 13 to 15. From November 16 to November 17, a total of 18 Blitz round will be played. A tie-breaker will be played if the need be. The prize ceremony will be held on the last day of the competition.
