The fifth game of the ongoing World Chess Championship 2024 between the defending champion Ding Liren, and the Indian Grandmaster Gukesh D ended in a 40-move draw, leveling the scores at 2.5-2.5 with a threefold repetition.

Shifting our focus to the details of Game 5, queens were off the board early in move 9. Ding, playing the game with the black pieces, deployed a defensive strategy. By the end of move 12, one pair of rooks was also traded off.

Surprisingly, Gukesh risked using a pawn instead of his rook to capture one of Ding's pieces. Though this decision kept the Indian GM in a tough spot in the game, he fought hard to make a strong comeback and hold the reigning champion for a draw.

It’s important to note that the duo came back into this game after they settled for a draw in the fourth game. Notably, there will be a total of 14 games in the World Chess Championship.

The first player to secure 7.5 points to be crowned World Champion. If the World Chess Championship final ends in a tie after all 14 games, a tiebreaker will be held to determine the eventual champion.

Speaking about the time format, each game will have a time control of 120 minutes for the first 40 overs, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 41.
