Kolkata - Grand Master Dzhumaev Marat of Uzbekistan carved out a hard-fought win over International Master Vishnu Prasanna to lift the title in the Rose Valley Open International Chess Tournament here Thursday.
Marat’s ultimate triumph made him richer by Rs. 3.5 lakh and brought heartbreak for two Indians – GMs S.P. Sethuraman and Deep Sengupta – in the final round at the Alekhine Chess Club.
Sengupta could not break IM Swapnil Dhopade’s defence and had to be content with sharing a point. Sethuraman had a quick draw with second seed GM Anton Korobov, and settled for the second slot.
IM Vidit Santosh Gujrathi was third, and Sengupta finished fifth.
Two members of “Team Anand” – GM Suryasekhar and top seed GM Radoslaw Wojtaszek ended their adventure here with wins over GM Adly Ahmed of Egypt and GM Viorel Iordachescu of Moldavia respectively.
