India`s Viswanathan Anand (R) plays against Norway`s Magnus Carlsen

Round 3 of the World Chess Championship 2013 between Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen has ended in a draw. Anand seemed to be in a winning position towards the closing stretch but a little tentativeness on the part of the defending champion allowed Carlsen to escape unscathed.

It was a thrilling finish, as Carlsen had to call on all of his cunning to emerge from the clutches of defeat, even as Anand kept plodding on serenely. A few moves before the end Anand realized that his opponent had successfully sidestepped the trap and he offered a draw, but Carlsen, to the surprise of many, refused the offer and continued. The miracle victory was not to be, however, as the two agreed to call things even after 51 moves.

All three rounds of the championship so far have ended in draws, which leaves the series at a stalemate.
