JJ Wetherholt joined West Virginia after an impressive high school baseball career with Mars Area High School. He was coveted by numerous collegiate programs but eventually committed to play for West Virginia.

For his freshman season, Wetherholt put up 64 hits, five home runs, 39 RBIs, 15 stolen bases and a .308 batting average in 54 games.

In his sophomore season, Wetherholt put up a stat line of 101 hits, 16 home runs, 60 RBIs, 36 stolen bases and a .449 batting average in 55 games.

For his junior season, Wetherholt put up a stat line of 41 hits, 8 home runs, 30 RBIs, six stolen bases and a .331 batting average in 36 games.

Wetherholt amassed 206 hits, 29 home runs, 129 RBIs, 57 stolen bases, and a .370 batting average in 145 collegiate games.

Wetherholt was a key part of West Virginia's play, and his versatility was a major advantage. The Mars Area High product racked up the honors and accolades with the program.

Wetherholt won Perfect Game Third-Team All-American honors, ABCA Second-Team All-Region honors, All-Big 12 First Team honors, the 2023 Big 12 Player of the Year Award and unanimous First-Team All-American honors in 2023. Bleacher Report and MLB.com see the Chicago White Sox selecting him at five. Finally, USA Today has the Los Angeles Angels selecting Wetherholt at eight.
