Jim Schlossnagle was announced as the new coach of the Texas Longhorns on Wednesday. He left Texas A&M less than 48 hours after coaching the Aggies to a runners-up spot in the CWS.
Soon after Schlossnagle's departure, reports suggested that there could be a mass exodus of Aggies players, with many entering the transfer portal. It also led to fans on social media debating whether there was an issue at Texas A&M or if players were willingly leaving the program.
Some suggested that most Aggies entering the transfer portal were keen on a reunion with Schlossnagle at Texas. A few also criticized the coach's decision to leave Texas A&M and join an in-state rival, as the follow-up led to chaos.
"Going to Texas!" one posted.
"Schloss obviously had zero integrity. I’d stay to prove I don’t need that turncoat," another wrote.
"Way too easy for coaches to change jobs. Should be steeper penalties for coaches not finishing out a contract," one user commented.
"How many of these are entering the portal only to go to Texas with coach? Is that how they have to transfer there?" posted another.
Meanwhile, other fans posed questions about the Texas A&M program in general, hinting at something fishy behind the scenes. A small section further went on to claim that players were not leaving despite entering the transfer portal.
"The age of college sports we live in. No love lost for A&M but this just… feels wrong," one wrote on X.
"Note no pitchers have entered.. AND some will come back," another commented.
"Just because they are in portal doesn’t mean they are leaving," one chimed in.
Interestingly, Jim Schlossnagle spoke about the sacrifices he made to take up the Texas A&M job, after his team's 6-5 loss against Tennessee in Game 3 of the CWS finals. When a reporter asked the in-demand coach whether he was considering any other jobs, Schlossnagle snapped back.
"I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again, and that hasn't changed in my mind," Schlossnagle said. "That's unfair to talk about something like that."
"I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job, and I've poured every ounce of my soul in this job. And I've given this job every single ounce I could possibly give it. So write that."
However, less than 24 hours after his bold statements hinting at staying with Texas A&M, it came out that Schlossnagle traded his maroon for burnt orange.
