The NCAA Division I Committee's Selection Show, which revealed the field of 64 for the baseball postseason, has seen Southeastern Conference teams dominate the field. Of the 64, 11 teams are from the SEC, which is a new record for the most teams from a single conference in a season. They beat their own previous record of 10, achieved last season.
While the number of SEC teams in the postseason this year is stunning, the seeding is simply astounding. The Tennessee Volunteers, Kentucky Wildcats and Texas A&M Aggies have been handed the top, second and third national seed in the postseason, respectively.
This allowed the SEC to make more history since this was the first time that the top three national seeds were all from the same conference in NCAA Baseball history. It's clear that SEC teams have made quite a mark on the ongoing college baseball season and fans appreciated the conference's teams' success with glowing praise:
"SEC baseball is always tough but seems to have been especially brutal this year," another fan said.
In fact, some fans have gone a step further and compared the might of SEC's baseball teams to their equivalents in other sports, primarily football and basketball:
"So SEC is now king in baseball too. Now, when will they be tops in basketball," said one fan.
"Everyone talks about how great SEC football is, but the depth and talent in SEC Baseball is even better than football. It’s crazy tough to win in the SEC!!" another fan added.
"SEC baseball is ridiculous. Top three overall seeds and five of the top seven in the NCAA Tournament. Kentucky the No. 2 overall seed, in a strong position to make a run at Omaha," said another fan.
SEC joint regular season champions make history of their own
By claiming the second seed, the Kentucky Wildcats achieved their highest-ever national seeding in program history. This augurs well for Nick Mingione's team, who shared the SEC regular season title with the Tennessee Volunteers.
Meanwhile, the Volunteers, who sealed the SEC Tournament yesterday, will take the national top seed for just the second time in their history.
It's clear from the seeding that these three teams are among the favorites to reach Omaha for the College World Series. The Vols' journey begins by hosting the Knoxville Regional, while the Wildcats' journey will do the same with the Lexington Regional.
As for the Aggies, they will host the Bryan-College Station Regional and with each of them being the top seeds for their Regionals, they should likely face no trouble in making the Super Regionals.
