The Texas Longhorns fired coach David Pierce on Monday morning, with both the school and Pierce releasing statements calling it a mutual decision. The firing came less than 24 hours before Game 3 of the 2024 College World Series between conference rival Texas A&M and Tennessee.
Pierce spent eight years heading the program, with the sack coming a week before the Longhorns' move to the Southeastern Conference.
Baseball fans took to social media to voice their displeasure at the Texas Longhorns for coming to this decision.
"Longhorns had a rough season for their standards and still make the tournament. Pierce has taken them to the College World Series a couple of times in his tenure. I guess the next coach will have to go to the CWS every season or lose their job," a fan posted.
Other people began to point toward what this means going forward for the program.
"Whether they will pursue Schloss or others on staff, or are going after Vitello, tu's timing of this announcement was without a doubt planned for this day. It's their way of 'controlling' the narrative - taking attention from two schools who are fighting for the Natty," a comment read.
"I can't see Schlossnagel coming to Texas if A&M wns the national championship tonight. Call me old fashioned (I am) but I don't want a guy wo would walk out on his team for a conference rival after winning a championship. Plus, A&M has a lot of money to keep him," a fan posted.
"Lol Texas fires Coach the day of the CWS finals... don't think it's any secret who they are going after," one X user wrote.
"Lose to the Aggies and watch them play for a NC and it’s a guaranteed change at coach," another commented.
It will be interesting to see which direction the school will go with its coaching search.
What is next for the Texas Longhorns?
What is next is a major shift in what the program can look like. With the season ending today, the NCAA transfer portal can open, and things will get interesting. On one hand, the coach who recruited them to join the school has left, and the team underperformed. On the other hand, these players would be joining the Southeastern Conference and continue to elevate their games as a result.
It will be an interesting case-by-case situation to see what comes out from the Longhorns and who their newest coach will be.
