Tony Vitello and Christian Moore were the main driving forces behind the Tennessee Vols' historic 2024 College World Series run. Tony Vitello coached Moore and the rest of his teammates to the best regular-season record and an almost flawless record in CWS play.
Following Moore's selection by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2024 MLB Draft, Vitello had this to say about his former star batter.
"Ian Kinsler and Max Scherzer are really the only two guys I've been around that have the same type of cognitive ability that C-Mo has."
Vitello's praise is even more special considering the caliber of players he completed Moore to. Ian Kinsler is a four-time All-Star, 2018 World Series Champion, two-time Gold Glove Award winner, and an inductee into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame.
Max Scherzer is one of the finest pitchers of his generation. His accolades include but aren't limited to eight all-star nods, two World Series wins, three Cy Young Awards, and four Wins Leader Awards. He remains a vital component of the Texas Rangers.
Christian Moore gave Tony Vitello a shout-out on draft day
Soon after the Angels selected him, Christian Moore reminded the world of his admiration for his collegiate head coach.
At one point, while being interviewed by Xavier Scruggs on MLB Network, Moore said,
"Of course, the GOAT sitting over there, Tony Vitello, much love to you. Thank you for everything."
Tony Vitello was a panelist for the MLB Networks' draft coverage.
What can you expect from Christian Moore in the MLB?
Christian Moore is a certified hitter and home run-getter. The second baseman ended his collegiate baseball career as the Vols' all-time and single-season home run leader with 61 and 33 HRs, respectively.
The Los Angeles Angels are known for fast-tracking their batters to the Major Leagues. Case in point: Zach Neto (2022 Draft) and Nolan Schanuel (2023). Hence, we expect Moore to play in the MLB in no time.
Moore has the skill set to be a multi-home run threat in the big leagues. However, he'll need to exercise patience as he goes through the typical growing pains expected from a recently drafted second baseman.
