Walker Janek is an American baseball catcher who is one of the top-catching prospects in the 2024 MLB Draft Class. Coming out of Gregory-Portland High School, Janek never received offers from any Power 5 schools or attention from MLB scouts. He led his school to a district championship in 2019 and was named 2021 District Offensive Player of the Year.
The Portland native was the 211th-ranked catcher in the 2021 draft class and began his collegiate career with Sam Houston State University where he had a breakout season in his debut campaign. In his freshman season in 2021, Janek secured a starting role for the Bearkats and posted 308/.432/.456 with 56 hits, four doubles, seven home runs and 33 RBIs and was named to the WAC all-defensive team. The following season, Janek posted 301/.377/.549 with 13 home runs, 65 RBIs and 10 stolen bases and was also honoured with the Most Outstanding Player of the WAC Tournament award. Janek is arguably the best-catching prospect in the 2024 MLB Draft class and has seen his stock surge after he was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year in 2024. In June, Janek received the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year award, given to the country’s top collegiate catcher for the 2024 season.
