Walker Janek is an American catcher who is playing with the Sam Houston Bearkats. He started his baseball career at the Gregory-Portland High School where he was named the District Offensive Player of the Year after a notable senior campaign. He batted .334 with six home runs, 36 stolen bases and 45 RBIs. But Janek never received attention from any Power 5 programs and was not a highly-rated prospect coming out of Gregory-Portland.
The Portland native began his collegiate baseball journey with Sam Houston Bearkats and was one of the heavy-hitting catches in his debut campaign. In his freshman season, Janek slashed .308/.432/.456 with 56 hits, seven home runs and 33 RBIs and was named on the Buster Posey Award watch list in 2022. The following season, Janek posted .301/.377/.549 with 68 hits, 17 doubles, 65 RBIs and 10 stolen bases and was also the recipient of the Most Outstanding Player of the WAC Tournament award. Janek is arguably the top catcher in the 2024 MLB Draft class as he was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year. Last week, Janek received the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year award which is given to the country’s top collegiate catcher for the 2024 season.
His 2024 season was even better as he hit .368 for the year with 15 doubles, 17 home runs, 58 RBIs and 40 walks. After three years at Sam Houston, Janek has developed into the best catching prospect in the 2024 Draft class.
