The 2024 College World Series begins today and there are familiar faces on the field. However, the Kentucky Wildcats qualified for the first time in their program's history and they are ready to enjoy the experience in Omaha.
Ahead of their game against the North Carolina State Wolfpack on Saturday afternoon, Kentucky coach Nick Mingione discussed how they are the team to root for as a scrappy underdog going forward in the NCAA Tournament.
"If the people of Omaha are looking for a team to root for, this is your team. This is your team. We are the first timers. We want to have a great experience. We want to be lifted up. I've seen this city, and I've seen the people of this place lift up opposing teams. I've watched this thing over and over. And if they're looking for a team that competes at the highest level and has an amazing time doing it, we would love for you to jump on board."
Who are some players from the Kentucky Wildcats that are leading the way?
This Kentucky Wildcats team has been defying the odds throughout the entire season and they have some incredible talents in their roster. One of which is Ryan Waldschmidt who has a 1.107 OPS with 14 home runs and 46 RBIs. He is doing more than just hitting as he has been a significant threat on the basepaths with 24 stolen bases.
Another player that people need to keep an eye on is pitcher Trey Pooser. He has done pretty well on the mound as he is 7-1 with a 3.46 ERA and a .201 opponent batting average in 83.1 innings. Teams will struggle to make significant contact off of his stuff and that will put the Wildcats in an advantageous situation.
