The 2024 College World Series will be decided in the next two (or three) games in the CWS. The Tennessee Titans and Texas A&M are battling for top honors in Omaha.
Before the CWS finals conclude, let's explore the modern era's most successful college baseball team.
Which program has won most College World Series titles in the last 50 years?
The LSU Tigers are the program that has won the most College World Series titles in the last 50 years. The Tigers won all seven of their titles after 1990.
Skip Bertman was a major contributor to the Tigers' legendary run as the head coach and led the program to five titles. Bertman walked so Todd Walker and Jay Johnson could run in the Tigers' hot seat.
The Tigers remain a collegiate powerhouse and last won it all in 2023.
Here's a look at the programs with the most CWS titles since 1974:
- LSU - 7 (1991, 1993, 1996-97, 2000, 2009, 2023)
- T-2. Arizona - 4 (1976, 1980, 1986, 2012)
- T-2. California State University - 4 (1979, 1984, 1995, 2004)
- T-2. Miami (Fla.) - 4 (1982, 1985, 1999, 2001)
- T-5. Oregon State - 3 (2006-07, 2018)
- T-5. Southern California* - 3 (1974, 1978, 1998)
*Please note that Southern California has the most College World Series titles in history but won nine of them before the 1974 cut-off mark for the above list. Furthermore, they've not won a single CWS title since 1998, compared to the above programs, which have all won titles since the turn of the millennium.
How did the LSU Tigers perform in 2024?
The LSU Tigers had a 40-21 regular season record in 2024, narrowly qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. They eventually landed the No. 2 seed in the Chapel Hill Regional behind the No. 4 overall national seed North Carolina (43-13).
The Tigers made a valiant effort against UNC in the Chapel Hill Regional but were eventually ousted from CWS contention. Hence, their fans were made to watch the College World Series from home without seeing the defending champions attempt a repeat of 2023's title run.
