Ross Dellinger of Yahoo Sports reports that the NCAA Basketball Tournament plans to expand by four or eight teams by next season. However, several issues could arise if the NCAA Basketball Tournament moves from its 68-team format. Let's understand why expanding the NCAA Basketball Tournament is not the best idea.

Why NCAA Basketball Tournament expansion is not a great move

Devalues the regular season

The regular season is already not valued as the conference games are the only thing that matters and that is for the seeding in the respective conference tournament. The only time the actual records during the regular season matter is when comparing two struggling teams looking for one of the last at-large bids.

Expanding the field to even more teams will only greatly devalue what the regular season means. The teams who do well in the conference tournament will be rewarded, so there will be no emphasis on playing well in non-conference games.

68 teams was more than enough

The field for the NCAA Basketball Tournament Tournament expanding seems way too much as 68 teams are more than enough. Having 64 teams gives a perfect bracket of four regions of 16 teams. People can argue that the extra four teams in the First Four games do not necessarily need to be there. However, the NCAA Basketball Tournament is too bloated to add more teams.

With the current field of 68 teams, there is a sense of things being set as is. The NCAA Tournament would have byes, taking away the excitement of underdogs taking down some of the top programs in the country during March Madness.

Continues to devalue other postseason tournaments

Adding more teams to the NCAA Basketball Tournament makes the NIT and other postseason tournaments less valuable. While that is not the NCAA Tournament's concern, the health of basketball would decrease as a result.
