The upcoming 2024-25 season in the SEC is set to be an interesting one with the addition of new teams, Oklahoma and Texas. The already competitive Southeastern Conference is about to get more cutthroat as teams vie for a spot in March Madness.

With this increased rivalry and higher stakes, players and coaches are expected to show up or risk the chance of getting dropped. Here are a few coaches from the SEC who could get fired after the upcoming season.

3 SEC college basketball coaches who could get fired in 2024-25 season

#1 Dennis Gates - Missouri Tigers

At the bottom of the SEC rankings are the Missouri Tigers led by Dennis Gates. In the 2023-24 season, the Tigers finished with an 8-24 overall record (0-18 in conference).

This poor season comes after an incredible 25-20 record in 2022-23 when Missouri advanced to the second round of March Madness. In his previous three-year stint with Cleveland State, Dennis Gates led the Vikings to two regular-season and one conference tournament championships.

The decline in the performance of the Tigers puts Gates at risk. They have added two top 15 transfers in Mark Mitchell from Duke and Tony Perkins from Iowa to the roster. However, if the team still fails to secure wins in the 2024-25 season, Dennis Gates may as well start updating his resume.

#2 Michael White - Georgia Bulldogs

Despite the 20-17 overall record, the Bulldogs finished last season with a 6-12 conference record. They have not won a conference championship since 2008 and made their last NCAA Tournament appearance in 2015.

At the time of his hiring, Michael White came with a 142-88 record during his seven-year stint with rival Florida. He led the team to four NCAA appearances. While he may not be fired immediately, patience wears thin over time and next season could be a deciding factor for his future in Athens, Georgia.

#3 Chris Jans - Mississippi State Bulldogs

The Bulldogs finished with a 21-14 overall record last season but were 8-10 in the conference. Chris Jans is yet to lead Mississippi State to a conference or regular season championship and the two NCAA Tournament appearances have ended in the first round.

All these reasons put coach Jans at risk of losing his position if similar results continue in the 2024-25 season. His previous stint with New Mexico State had better results and championship wins. It was also reported that Jans interviewed for the coaching position at Arkansas before John Calipari was chosen. Even if he is not fired, it seems Chris Jans could be interested in moving.
