The 2024-25 women's basketball season is less than two months away and fans are looking forward to another exciting college hoops action. The previous year was great for guards, with Iowa standout Caitlin Clark, USC guard JuJu Watkins and UConn veteran Paige Bueckers leading the charge, as they provided an action-packed NCAA women's tournament that was one for the books.
This year, the position remains stacked and various teams even have the luxury of keeping excellent combinations who can fill up the stat sheets and provide tons of leadership for their teams. With this in mind, here are the five best guard combinations to look forward to this coming women's hoops season.
5 best guard duos in the 2024-25 women's basketball season
#5. Flau'jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams - LSU
Flau'jae Johnson continued to be an integral part in LSU's all-out attack last season, tallying 14.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. The 5-foot-10 Johnson made 50.4% of her shots from the field and made 76.9% of his attempts from the foul line.
Meanwhile, Mikaylah Williams is coming off an excellent freshman season for LSU, averaging 14.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.2 steals per game. The six-foot guard appeared in 34 games and played 32.0 minutes per contest. She shot an excellent 47.1% from the field and made 78.0% of her free throws.
Williams and Johnson are expected to form an explosive pairing that will terrorize the SEC and provide many exciting highlights in the coming season.
#4. Olivia Miles and Hannah Hidalgo - Notre Dame
Olivia Miles had her best season so far in a Notre Dame uniform, tallying 14.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 6.9 apg and 2.1 steals. The 5-foot-10 incoming senior shot 46.0% from the field and 76.7% from the 15-foot line last year.
Hannah Hidalgo was a sensation on her freshman year with Notre Dame. The 5-foot-6 guard sizzled for 22.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists per contest on her first year with the Fighting Irish. Hidalgo shot 44.6% from the field, including 34.0% from the 3-point line and made 77.6% of her foul shots.
Miles and Hidalgo will make Notre Dame the team to beat in the ACC this coming season.
#3. Juju Watkins and Talia von Oelhoffen - USC
Juju Watkins was sensational on her freshmen season with USC, tallying 27.1 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 3.3 apg, 2.3 spg and 1.6 bpg. The 6-foot-2 Watkins was a lethal scorer despite shooting only 40.1 from the field. She was excellent from the free-throw line, making 85.2% of her shots.
Meanwhile, Talia von Oelhoffen transferred to USC after four seasons with Oregon State. The fifth-year senior posted averages of 12.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.0 steals per contest in 105 games with the Beavers. Von Oelhoffen is an excellent free-throw shooter, making 88.9% of her attempts.
Watkins and von Oelhoffen are expected to form a dynamic alliance with USC as it opens the new season as part of the Big 10 Conference.
#2. Saniya Rivers and Aziaha James - NC State
Saniya Rivers is coming off her best season in the collegiate ranks, averaging 12.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 3.7 apg and 2.1 spg. The six-foot-one incoming senior made 73.5% of her shots from the free-throw area — her best percentage in three seasons.
Like Rivers, Aziaha James put up big numbers for NC State in the 2023-24 season, tallying 16.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.9 apg and 1.0 spg. The 5-foot-9 dynamo made 2.0 3-pointers per game and shot 41.6% from the field. James was also good from the free-throw line, making 78.1% of her attempts.
James and Rivers will give Hannah Hidalgo and Olivia Miles a run for their money in the ACC and will be a formidable duo in the 2024-25 women's basketball season.
#1. Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd - UConn
Paige Bueckers was arguably one of the best guards who set foot in the 2023-24 women's basketball season. The 6-foot junior tallied a career-best 21.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg and 1.4 bpg. Bueckers also put up 3.8 apg and 2.2 spg to help the Huskies reach the Final Four last year.
Azzi Fudd, on the other hand, had her junior season halted abruptly due to a season-ending injury. In two games, she was averaging 11.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 2.5 apg and 1.0 spg. She'll be back for another crack this coming season, as she hopes to be healthy and help UConn capture its first national title in nine seasons.
