Senior Addison O’Grady had an impressive all-around performance as the No. 22 Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the BYU Cougars 68-48 on Friday in the Riviera Division of the Cancun Challenge.

O'Grady contributed 12 points on the night on 6-of-8 shooting, along with four rebounds, three blocks, one assist and one steal. Despite committing two fouls and turning the ball over twice, O'Grady joined teammates Hannah Stuelke and Aaliyah Guyton in scoring double digits for the Hawkeyes.

O'Grady's first points of the second quarter came more than two minutes into the period after she scored in the paint, following a block against Kendra Gillispie. At halftime, Iowa held a 25-19 lead.

The third quarter saw a balanced offensive effort from Iowa, with six players contributing to the scoring. O'Grady added four points, three rebounds, and two blocks, and was one of only two players, along with Stuelke, to score six or more points at that point. Iowa went on to score 20 points in the quarter, extending their lead to 45-30.

In the final quarter, both teams went through another nearly three-minute scoring drought before O'Grady hit a close-range layup to break the silence. Iowa finished strong, scoring 43 points in the second half.

O’Grady has been in great form lately, with Iowa remaining undefeated. Their most recent victory before this one was a 69-62 win over Rhode Island on Thanksgiving Day, where O'Grady led the team with 18 points in the absence of leading scorer Lucy Olsen, who was sidelined with a knee injury.

Heading into the game, O'Grady was averaging 15.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.6 blocks over seven games.

Iowa manages another win without Lucy Olsen

Iowa's leading scorer, Lucy Olsen, who averages 17.3 ppg, missed her second consecutive game due to a large gash on her knee. Despite the absence of their leader, the Hawkeyes pulled through and cruised to a 20-point win.

The Hawkeyes led 16-10 after the first quarter and maintained a six-point lead through the second, despite only scoring nine points. At halftime, they were ahead 25-19, with Stuelke leading the team with 11 points.

In the third quarter, Iowa came out strong, with a layup from O'Grady followed by a three-pointer from senior Kylie Feuerbach. The Hawkeyes hit four 3-pointers in the period, shooting 50% from beyond the arc, to extend their lead to 45-30. In the final quarter, Iowa made 5-of-7 3-pointers, setting a new season-high for 3s in a game.

Defensively, the Hawkeyes contained BYU’s standout freshman Delaney Gibb, who entered the game as the fifth-highest-scoring freshman in the country. Gibb finished with just six points on 1-for-9 shooting, part of BYU's overall offensive struggles, which included a poor 7-for-23 shooting performance from deep.

The Hawkeyes have now won 117 games since the 2020-21 season, tying for the fourth-best record nationally (117-30). This season, Iowa has won seven out of eight games by double digits.

Iowa's next challenge will be a road game against Tennessee in the Women’s Champions Classic on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. CT at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The game will be broadcast nationally on FOX and the Hawkeye Radio Network.
