The No. 3 South Carolina Gamecocks and Ashlyn Watkins took on the No. 9 TCU Horned Frogs on Sunday night (Dec. 8) in a top-10 clash that had a lot of hype surrounding it. All eyes were on Watkins as she threw down a vicious one-handed dunk during the game, while TCU center Sedona Prince had an unusually quiet night.
Coming into tonight's game, TCU star Hailey Van Lith had propelled her team to an undefeated 9-0 start that included downing Hannah Hidalgo and the Fighting Irish. But Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks proved to be too good for Van Lith and the Horned Frogs, winning comfortably and handing TCU their first loss of the season 85-52.
Ashlyn Watkins vs Sedona Prince matchup
Ashlyn Watkins played 23 minutes and made her presence felt all over the court, contributing six points, two rebounds, one assist, two steals, and one block. She also rocked the rim for her third slam dunk in as many seasons with the Gamecocks.
The 6-ft-3 junior forward intercepted a pass from Madison Conner just beyond midcourt late in the first quarter. She then sprinted toward the basket and delivered a right-handed dunk, outpacing the 6-foot-7 Sedona Prince, who attempted to close in for a defensive block.
Coming into this season, Ashlyn Watkins faced uncertainty about her involvement following a suspension due to an offseason arrest. However, all charges were dropped in November and Watkins quickly rejoined practice. She's now a vital part of Dawn Staley's lineup, even delivering what might be the play of the year.
Prince, who averaged 19.5 points and 10.8 rebounds coming into this game, had a quiet night by her standards, contributing six points, two rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block in 33 minutes of play on the night.
Both Prince and Watkins weren't as efficient from the field as they'd have liked to be, with each player shooting 3-8 overall.
MiLaysia Fulwiley had 20 points for the Gamecocks, while Hailey Van Lith notched an impressive 21 points and six assists in a losing effort for the Horned Frogs.
South Carolina's next matchup is at home against USF next Sunday (Dec. 21), while TCU will host Louisiana Tech on the same day.
