Auburn vs Duke prediction
Auburn has played excellently in the 2024-25 college basketball season, winning all seven nonconference games.
The Tigers's fearsome unit went into high gear last week and dominated the 2024 Maui Invitational Tournament. In the quarterfinals and semifinals, they beat No. 9 Iowa State (83-81) and No. 12 North Carolina (85-72) before coasting to a 90-76 win over Memphis in the final clash.
Auburn coach Bruce Pearl relies heavily on power forward Johni Broome and the 6-foot-10 star has responded with impressive numbers on both sides of the court. In seven games, Broome has averaged 20.7 points, 12.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 3.1 blocks and is shooting 59.4% from the field.
The big man has received great help from teammates Chad Baker-Mazara, Denver Jones, Chaney Johnson, and Miles Kelly. They have averaged double figures and made essential contributions to Auburn's run.
Meanwhile, Duke played lockdown defense to defeat Seattle, 70-48, in its last outing on Friday. The Blue Devils held the Redhawks to 21.3 percent shooting from the field, including 21.1 percent from the 3-point line, to bounce back from its previous defeat at the hands of No. 1 Kansas.
Five-star freshman Cooper Flagg has been good as advertised for the Jon Scheyer-coached squad, leading the team in four statistical departments. He has averaged 15.9 points, 8.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks per game.
The 6-foot-9 Montverde Academy standout has received help in offense from fellow freshman Kon Knueppel and veteran Tyrese Proctor. Knueppel has tallied 13.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.0 steals per contest, while Proctor averages 12.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg and 2.4 apg.
The Blue Devils have averaged 80.7 points as a team and 46.3 percent from the field. They will be challenged by a tough Auburn squad with limited opponents to 66.6 points and 40.3 percent field goals.
Despite having an inferior record, Duke is a 2.5-point favorite to win the encounter against Auburn. The total is set at 144.5.
Prediction: Auburn Tigers 71, Duke Blue Devils 73.
