Ben McCollum is an American college basketball coach. McCollum has taken Northwest Missouri State to an elite status in the past decade and was named Drake’s next men’s basketball coach. He played basketball at North Iowa Area Community College for two years before transferring to Northwest Missouri State in 2001. He led the Bearcats to a 51-12 record and an Elite Eight appearance for the first time in the program’s history during the 2001-02 campaign.
McCollum's coaching career began at his alumnus when he joined the Bearcats as a graduate assistant coach under head coach Steve Tappmeyer. During his two years with the program, McCollum led Northwest to their second Elite Eight appearance in the program’s history. He later served as the assistant coach at Emporia State from 2004 to 2008 before returning to Northwest as a head coach in 2009. For the next 15 seasons, McCollum transformed the Bearcats into one of the powerhouses of college basketball and led them to 11 straight MIAA regular-season titles and 12 in total. During his 15-year career, McCollum led Northwest to four NCAA Division II national championships and a 394-91 record. McCollum is a five-time recipient of the NABC Division II National Coach of the Year award and a seven-time MIAA Coach of the Year.
Following an illustrious career with the Bearcats, McCollum decided to join the Drake Bulldogs on a five-year contract after the 2023-24 regular season.
