According to his roster profile on the Purdue Boilermakers website, he had offers from Arizona, Texas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, Iowa, and Creighton before he committed to play for Purdue.

In the 2022-23 season, Heide, as a redshirt, was sidelined for all of the summer and was in rehabilitation after a foot injury. His four years of eligibility started from the 2023-24 season. In the 2023-24 season, he attended all 39 games and averaged 3.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. He also bagged a place in the Big Ten All-Academic Team.

The aforementioned university website further reports that Heidi attended Wasatch Academy High School where he was a four-star recruit. He also helped his team win the 2021 Minnesota State Championship. Heidi then moved to Wasatch Academy where he was forced to miss most of the games as a senior following a foot injury. As a junior, he averaged almost 18 points and six rebounds per game.
