Standout Duke freshman Cooper Flagg is one of college basketball’s most electrifying young talents. And his fastbreak dunk in a 76-47 win over the Pittsburgh Panthers on Tuesday provided a signature moment.
Duke graduate student Sion James, playing in his fifth season, could only marvel.
“Cooper does special stuff all the time," James said. "That showed us that he can still surprise us.”
James' words underscored Flagg’s ability to deliver jaw-dropping moments, even to his teammates who see him in action daily.
Flagg is one of the most hyped players in recent memory, but he has lived up to expectations. Known for his athleticism and high basketball IQ, has quickly become the centerpiece of Duke’s lineup. Yet, according to James, Flagg’s impact goes beyond the stat sheet.
“He gets the whole gym going!” James said in the locker room after the game.
Cooper Flagg having impact at Duke
Whether it’s a thunderous dunk, a clutch defensive stop or a perfectly timed assist, Cooper Flagg’s energy and talent have a contagious effect that lifts his teammates and ignites the Cameron Indoor Stadium crowd.
James, a steady and experienced leader, seemed genuinely thrilled about playing alongside the freshman phenom. His praise highlighted the camaraderie and chemistry within this year’s team — a critical factor as No. 4 Duke (13-2, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) aims to contend for an NCAA championship.
While Cooper Flagg’s star power has undoubtedly taken the spotlight, James’ words are a reminder of the collaborative spirit that drives great teams. For all of his individual brilliance, it’s the collective belief in his abilities — paired with Duke’s trademark team-first culture — that could propel the Blue Devils to new heights this season.
As the season unfolds, fans will undoubtedly be eager to witness more of the “special stuff” that Flagg brings to the court. And with players like Sion James backing him up and feeding off his energy, Duke basketball seems to be poised for an exciting campaign.
