UConn coach Dan Hurley is known for his intensity on the sidelines. In the Huskies' Big East Conference showdown against Butler, the two-time champion coach was enraged by the official. Up by 10 with 2:58 left in the first half, Hurley charged at the official, arguing with a call.
The official, wanting to have no business with the coach, turned his back to seemingly ignore his tirade. Then, Hurley threw a fit on him and spoke the following:
“Don’t turn your back on me. I’m the best coach in the f***ing sport,” Hurley said.
Dan Hurley escaped without being slapped with a technical foul. The incident didn't help the No. 19-ranked UConn in the second half as they squandered an eight-point lead and allowed Butler to close in on them in the second half. Regulation play ended at 68-all and the game headed into overtime, ending with the Huskies winning 80-78.
UConn struggling in its 2024-25 Big East campaign
The UConn Huskies struggled in the early part of the Big East regular season. After winning four straight against Xavier, Butler, DePaul and Providence, UConn lost two of its last three games to Villanova and Creighton.
The losses dropped them from ninth in the AP poll to 19th before their home game against Butler. Their setbacks have been close, averaging 3.5 points in those losses.
After Tuesday's game against Butler, UConn has 12 games remaining in the Big East and they still have a chance to exact revenge against the Wildcats and the Bluejays in the second round of their regular season schedule.
In the past two seasons, UConn has been able to catch a streak and push it through the NCAA Tournament so there's still a chance that they can successfully defend the national title and win an unprecedented three-peat.
All UConn fans have to do right now is to be patient, as Dan Hurley and the Huskies may just be finding their way back to that game-changing streak that brought them to glory over the past two seasons.
