UConn Huskies coach Dan Hurley made headlines after his team's 80-78 overtime win over the Butler Bulldogs on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Known for his strong reactions, the master tactician was once again captured arguing with in-game officials.
The sequence occurred at the 2:58 mark of the first half after a UConn turnover turned into an official TV timeout with the home team up by 10 points, 37-27. Hurley was seen frantically chasing one of the referees and was quoted as saying:
"Don't turn your back on me, I'm the best coach in the f***ing sport."
In true Hurley fashion, the 52-year-old reposted a @barstoolsports official report on the matter on X. He captioned his repost with a video where his face was edited into actor Michael Douglas' character from the 1993 film, "Falling Down." Robert Duvall's character was pointing a gun at Douglas, when the latter stated the words:
"I'm the bad guy? How'd that happen?"
For now, the repost serves as Hurley's direct response to his naysayers who don't favor his aggressive nature. Naturally, fans had a field day:
"LMAOOO, never leave us coach...We were made for each other," one fan replied.
"Yes Coach! You are our bad guy!," another fan said.
"Dan the man!," a user exclaimed.
Whether or not Hurley's behavior is justified, what can't be denied is that he has steered the Huskies back into the win column with a 15-5 overall record, 6-2 in the Big East conference, as the program works towards a potential third straight National Championship in March.
Dan Hurley opens up on Big East referees
Later on, during the post-game press conference, Dan Hurley re-asserted to the media that he thought highly of the in-game officials fielded by the Big East conference. However, one specific facet he feels they lack is a specific part of foul calling:
"We're a movement team. We have a lot of off-the-ball movement...But, we get held the whole game. I don't think it can get worse for me, look at the free throw differential. I think we got great refs...But, where is the freedom of movement?," Hurley said. (6:20)
"We're just getting mauled while we're trying to run off screens. We can't move anywhere to get the ball. It's got to stop happening. If it's because they don't like me, that's a problem because that's an integrity of the game issue...It's a problem, and it's been going on for a lot of games. I haven't said anything," he then added.
"I don't think there's a program that's won as much as we've won that at times, gets as bad a whistle," Hurley would go on to conclude his statement.
After a rough start to the campaign, Hurley and the Huskies have found success, which could be credited to their adjustments to the insufficient foul calls in off-ball plays. UConn will now travel to the Xavier Musketeers' home arena to battle it out on Saturday, Jan. 25. Reckon the game officials will be happy to see Hurley?
