Luigi “Geno” Auriemma is regarded amongst the successful women’s college basketball team head coaches under NCAA Division I. He has been the head coach of the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team since 1985.
Hailing from Montello, Italy, Geno Auriemma had started his coaching career as an assistant coach at St. Joseph’s University. This was followed by a stint as an assistant coach at Bishop Kendrick High School.
He started his career as a head coach with the UConn Huskies. He is notable for developing talented players like Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart and Paige Bueckers among others.
Under Geno Auriemma’s guidance, the team won the National Championship staggering eleven times as of March 2024. Auriemma has also been an eight time Naismith Coach of the Year, seven time WBCA Coach of the Year and nine time AP Coach of the Year so far. He became a National Italian American Sports Hall of Famer in 2007. Furthermore, Auriemma also became a Basketball Hall of Famer in 2006.
