The Georgetown basketball team, commonly known as the Georgetown Hoyas, represents Georgetown University in men’s intercollegiate basketball. The team made its debut on February 9, 1907. With a record of 47-30, the Hoyas have made 31 appearances in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament.

The team competes in the Big East Conference. Under coach John Thompson, the team won the national championship in 1984. In the final game, the Hoyas secured a victory with a score of 84-75 over Houston. The Georgetown basketball team has appeared 13 times in the National Invitation Tournament throughout its history and have a record of 15–14, as of December 2024.

Georgetown Basketball Head Coach 2024

Ed Cooley is the head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball program, as of December 2024. On March 20, 2023, Cooley accepted an offer for the head coach position at Georgetown. Prior to his time at Georgetown, Cooley served as the head coach of the Providence Friars men's basketball team from 2011 to 2023.

Cooley also has a basketball playing career. He was a three-year team captain at Stonehill and was named to the Northeast-10 Conference academic honor roll. Cooley graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in history from Stonehill in 1994.

He started his coaching career as an assistant coach in 1994. He served as a head coach for Fairfield Stags men's basketball (2006-2011), Providence Friars men's basketball (2011-2023), and Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball (2023-present). Cooley received national honors as the Naismith College Coach of the Year and Big East Coach of the Year in the same year in 2022.

Former head coach, John Thompson, Jr. holds the record for being the longest-serving head coach of the Georgetown basketball team. Coach Thompson joined the Hoyas in 1972 and remained at the position until 1999, dedicating 26 and a half years to leading the team.

Associate Head Coach

As of December 2024, Jeff Battle serves as the associate head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team. Jeff Battle joined the Georgetown basketball coaching staff in 2023. Prior to his time at Georgetown, he served as the associate head coach at the Providence men's basketball program from 2021 to 2023. At Georgetown, Jeff Battle's role as an associate head coach involved the recruitment process, on-floor practice preparation, and program development, ensuring that the team is performing well.

Brian Blaney, Walt Corbean, and LaDontae Henton are the assistant coaches of the Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team, as of Deccember 2024.

Brian Blaney joined the Georgetown Hoyas coaching staff as an assistant coach in 2023. Previously, he was the assistant coach at Providence basketball coaching staff from 2011 to 2023.

Walt Corbean serves as the assistant coach/director of operations in the Georgetown Hoyas basketball program. He joined Georgetown in 2023 and previously worked as an Assistant Coach at Boston University from 2014 to 2023.

LaDontae Henton serves as the assistant coach/director of player development and joined the Georgetown coaching staff in 2022 as an Associate Director of Player Development and got the role of Assistant Coach in 2023.
