Junior forward Hannah Stuelke delivered a strong all-around performance as No. 22 Iowa defeated Rhode Island 69-62 in the Cancun Challenge on Thursday night.

The 6-foot-2 third-year player extended her streak of double-digit scoring games to seven, contributing 13 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 36 minutes. Stuelke shot 4-of-9 from the field and 5-of-8 from the free-throw line, making her Iowa’s second-leading scorer behind Addison O’Grady.

The first half was a low-scoring affair, with both teams struggling offensively. Iowa led 19-15 after the first quarter but went scoreless for the first three minutes of the second until Stuelke powered her way into the paint for her first basket. At halftime, Iowa held a slim advantage, shooting just 37% from the field compared to Rhode Island’s 36%. Stuelke was a bright spot for the Hawkeyes with six points, two rebounds, and a steal by the break.

Stuelke’s consistency has been a cornerstone for Iowa. Her 43 career double-figure scoring games rank fifth in program history since 2020. Through seven games this season, Stuelke is averaging 14.5 points (third-best on the team), 7.5 rebounds (team-high), and 2.3 assists. She also ranks third on the team in made field goals (30). In the previous game, she contributed 11 points, six rebounds, and a block in Iowa’s dominant 72-43 win over Washington State.

Hawkeyes Prevail in Thanksgiving Day Showdown

Iowa faced significant challenges on Thanksgiving, including trailing at halftime and being tied after three quarters. Without star point guard Lucy Olsen, the Hawkeyes found themselves in a tightly contested game. Despite the pressure, they stepped up in the closing moments to remain undefeated.

The Hawkeyes shot an efficient 52.1% from the field, 35.3% from beyond the arc, and converted 13-of-17 free throws. However, turnovers were an issue, with Iowa committing 22, including six by freshman Taylor Stremlow, who also had four assists in her 25 minutes of action—a learning experience for the young player.

Under new head coach Jan Jensen, the Hawkeyes are off to a 7-0 start, making her only the second coach in program history to achieve this, following Angie Lee’s 7-0 beginning in the 1995–96 season. Since the 2020-21 campaign, Iowa has compiled an impressive 116-30 record, tied for fourth-best nationally.

Up next, Iowa faces BYU on Friday at 8 p.m. (CT) in the Cancun Challenge, with the game streaming on FloCollege (subscription required) and airing on the Hawkeye Radio Network. After that, the team will have a week off before taking on Tennessee on Dec. 7 in Brooklyn.
