Geno Auriemma is set to enter his 40th season as the head coach of UConn's women's basketball team. Auriemma joined the Huskies in 1985 and completely revolutionized the program, leading them to 11 national championships, 27 conference tournament titles and six undefeated seasons.
In June 2024, Auriemma agreed to a contract extension with Connecticut, a five-year contract worth $18.7 million, keeping him in Storrs through the 2028-29 season. It also launched him to second place, tied with South Carolina's Dawn Staley in the list of highest-paid women's basketball coaches, only behind LSU's Kim Mulkey.
Under the new agreement, Geno Auriemma will make $3.34 million in the 2024-25 season. $400,000 of that is from his base salary, and a further $2.94 million from 'consulting and media obligations,' as per ESPN.
"I'd like to thank David Benedict, Radenka Maric and the University of Connecticut leadership for their trust in me and their commitment to the women's basketball program.
"I still find it hard to believe that I've been at UConn for over half my life. I feel like there's so much more that can be done, and will be done, and I'm excited to be the one to do it with my staff and my team. I'm probably as excited about these next few years as I've ever been over the last 40."
The nine-time AP Coach of the Year only made $28,229 as his first salary forty years ago. Likewise, during the 2013-14 season, his earnings were approximately $2.2 million.
Geno Auriemma's Olympics record as head coach
Geno Auriemma has also served as the head coach of the US national women's team, leading them to success in several major tournaments. Under his leadership, Team USA captured three gold medals at the Olympic games (2000 Sydney, 2012 London and 2016 Rio de Janeiro).
Earlier in July, Auriemma discussed his tenure with CT Insider:
"If someone had said to me, 'You're going to be the national team coach and you're going to coach in the Olympics and you'll have the opportunity to coach the best players that you've ever coached from the school you're connected to.' I mean, really? That's a fairy tale."
Furthermore, Auriemma guided Team USA to two FIBA World Championship glory, the 2010 tournament in the Czech Republic and the 2014 tournament in Turkey.
