When it comes to coaches with most national championships, Kim Mulkey stands out. The LSU coach has won four NCAA titles, three with Baylor and one with LSU, making her one of the most successful coaches in women's basketball.
In an interview with BRProud News' reporter Chessa Bouche in May 2023, after she had won her fourth national title with LSU, Mulkey said about whether winning the championship with LSU — her home state school — was more special than her previous titles with Baylor.
"All the championships mean the same, but there are little personal touches to each one," Mulkey said (1:30). "The one that means the most to me is when I look across at fans who are experiencing it for the first time ever.
"We had many of those moments at Baylor. To come back to a state that knows me, I know every nook and cranny of this state, and to do it for the first time ever in the history of basketball at LSU — those are the things that just mean so much to me.
"I never compare championships, that’s like comparing your children — you don’t do it. You love them for different reasons."
Kim Mulkey, a Santa Ana, California-born, grew up in Tickfaw, Louisiana, where she would become a standout basketball player at Hammond High School. She went on to play for Louisiana Tech University and won national championships as a player with the Lady Techsters in 1981 and 1982.
Kim Mulkey's LSU Tigers stay undefeated with championship dreams alive
Kim Mulkey's team has been in terrific form this season, racking up an unbeaten 14-0 record in their nonconference schedule with one game remaining before the start of SEC play. No. 6 LSU will play Albany at home on Sunday.
Their confidence has been fueled by the star power of players like junior guard Flau'jae Johnson, who's averaging a team-high 20.9 points per game and senior Aneesah Morrow, who's averaging a double-double with 18.3 points and 14.0 rebounds per game.
However, Kim Mulkey - who has a net worth of $12 million (as per Celebrity Net Worth) - knows that the real test will come in SEC play.
"We've got to get better defensively," she said. "We just don't defend like it matters. ... and that just bothers me.
"I know what we face when we come back, when we start SEC play, and some of them in there need to do some soul searching."
The Lady Tigers will tip off their conference slate on Jan. 2 against Arkansas. They face the defending champion South Carolina on Jan. 23 at Colonial Life Arena.
