Iowa men's basketball team is all set for the 2024-25 season, which will be Fran McCaffery's 15th year as coach. Last season, the Hawkeyes were knocked out early, losing in the second round of the Big Ten and NIT Tournaments. They also didn't make it to March Madness.
To improve on last season's lackluster performance, Coach McCaffery and his staff acquired two freshmen Cooper Koch, a six-foot-eight shooting guard and Chris Tadjo, a six-foot-eight power forward. Iowa also landed two players from transfer: Drew Thelwell and Seydou Traore.
Moreover, Iowa men's basketball recruiters have already begun their quest for talents for the 2025 class and have their eyes on more than a dozen prospects. Here are the top three players who might join the program.
Iowa men's basketball top three prospects in the class of 2025
#3 Hudson Greer
- Position: Small Forward
- High School: Montverde Academy, Montverde, FL
Hudson Greer, a four-star forward, is among the top choices of Iowa basketball's 2025 prospects. He's ranked 36th nationally and sixth among small forwards, as per 247Sports.
Greer played his last three seasons of high school basketball with Lake Travis High, Texas. He averaged 22.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.8 assists per game in 2023-24. But, for his senior year, he has transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida.
Besides Iowa, Greer holds offers from Alabama, Auburn, Creighton, LSU and UCLA. His scoring ability might be what Coach McCaffery is missing within this Iowa team.
#2 Matt Gilhool
- Position: Power Forward
- High School: William Penn Charter, Philadelphia, PA
Matt Gilhool, a native of Elizabethtown, PA, is one of Iowa men's basketball's top targets for the 2025 recruiting class. The Hawkeyes made an offer to Gilhool in February 2024, and it has been announced that he will visit the campus in September 2024.
The six-foot-10 forward plays for William Penn Charter High. On Monday, Gilhool revealed his final seven schools featuring Iowa, Georgia Tech, Alabama and LSU. His great finishing touch and athleticism make him a crucial player for any team he joins.
#1 Malachi Moreno
- Position: Center
- High School: Great Crossing, Georgetown, KY
A four-star, top-25 center, Malachi Moreno has been under the radar of Iowa men's basketball and coach McCaffery for a long time. He received an offer from Iowa in August 2022 and went for a college visit in September 2023.
The No.1 prospect of Kentucky state, Moreno, played 37 games for Great Crossing in the 2023-24 season, averaging 16.0 points, 13.3 rebounds, 3.7 blocks and 2.2 assists per game. Moreno brings shot-blocking, rebounding and interior presence to the court.
