College basketball analysts Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander weren't impressed with the debut of Baylor five-star guard VJ Edgecombe against Gonzaga on Monday.
Edgecombe didn't have an impressive debut like his batchmates Tre Johnson, Kon Knueppel and Cooper Flagg, finishing with four points, seven rebounds, one assist, one steal and two blocks in 29 minutes.
The freshman, however, made his presence felt in the loss. He jumped for a trending highlight-reel dunk in the closing minutes of the game, posterizing Joe Few, the son of Gonzaga coach Mark Few.
During the Eye On College Basketball podcast on Tuesday, Parrish and Norlander weren't amused by Edgecombe's jam with Norlander describing the dunk "Danny Greenesque."
"What the hell is VJ Edgecombe doing on in the game dunking on the floor. You got Joe (Few) getting mop up minutes just happy to be on the floor, Mark's like: Yeah, get in there kiddos ... let's see what you got... (Joe Few) gets nutted man are you kidding me? That was that was Danny Greenesque," Norlander said. (8:59)
"VJ Edgecombe finished with four points. Those were two of them," he added. "Yeah, It wasn't the best debut," Parrish replied. (9:25)
The five-star guard out of Long Island Lutheran shot 2-of-11 from the field and had three turnovers and two blocks. He seemingly had opening-day jitters in his first 10 attempts until that highlight-reel dunk.
VJ Edgecombe gets overshadowed by four-star guard Robert Wright III
VJ Edgecombe started for Baylor but couldn't get his game going, missing nine of 11 attempts from the field and was 0-of-3 from the 3-point line.
It was a far cry from his high school averages of 17.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.3 steals per game.
He was overshadowed by four-star point guard Robert Wright III, who played off the bench and had an efficient 12 points, one rebound, six assists and two steals in 30 minutes of action. He was 6 of 14 from the field to be one of the few bright spots for Scott Drew's squad.
Miami transfer Norchad Omier led Baylor with 15 points, nine rebounds, one steal and one block while Josh Ojianwuna added 10 points, six rebounds, one assist and three steals.
VJ Edgecombe will have another chance to improve on his stats in his second game for the Bears. However, they face a tough task ahead, meeting No. 16 Arkansas on Nov. 9.
The Razorbacks, coached by former NCAA champion John Calipari, will have five-star guard Boogie Fland and quality transfer pickups in D.J. Wagner, Adou Thiero, Zvonimir Ivisic, Johnell Davis and Jonas Aidoo.
