Paige Bueckers made history on Sunday, Jan. 19, in her team's 96-36 drubbing of the Seton Hall Pirates. The UConn Huskies guard became the fastest player to reach 2,000 career points in program history at just 102 games, surpassing the previous mark set by WNBA legend Maya Moore at 108.
During her post-game interview with SNY, Bueckers shared her thoughts on accomplishing the feat — and what she said has captivated the attention of many, especially after it was posted on @womenschampsclassic on Instagram.
The senior sensation's quote was a shoutout to everyone who has helped her not only reach the mark but also become the standout player she is today.
"It takes a village. I did not get here by myself," Bueckers said. (0:28). "It's funny, I have my pilates instructor here, Brooke, who came to a game...It's just people like my coach, teammates (and) everybody who's invested in me and stayed with me. I had a tough journey, but it's been a beautiful journey. I've seen so many people invest and do a lot for me.
"I just really want to reward their hard work because everybody sees the 2,000 points, but nobody sees the 2,000 days of hard work. So, it's just a testimony to everybody who's invested in me."
It was even referenced by one of her trainers in popular basketball skills coach Chris Brickley's Instagram post of celebrating Bueckers' milestone.
"'Everybody sees the 2000 points. Nobody sees the 2000 days of hard work.' Fastest player in UConn History to score 2000 points! Thank you for trusting me to be part of your journey. Thankful! Keep pushing! Keep grinding!" he wrote on the caption.
Even if she has achieved the one-of-a-kind accomplishment, Bueckers' goals remain the same — which is to break UConn's national championship drought since 2016 en route to her winning her first title. With an 8-0 Big East record so far and the fourth-year star leading the way, the team is headed towards that trajectory.
Paige Bueckers is ecstatic to have Aubrey Griffin back in action
Besides celebrating the 2,000-point milestone, Paige Bueckers and the whole UConn program also welcomed the return of fifth-year forward Aubrey Griffin who has been out for 381 days due to a left knee ACL injury. The 5'11 scorer claimed that it was Griffin's celebration apart from her's, sharing:
"It's Aubrey day, I'm super happy for her. The whole team is extremely happy to see her, how hard she's worked, to see everything she's been through, and how it's never deterred who she is as a basketbally player, as a human. It's just extremely rewarding to see her have fun out there tonight," Bueckers said (1:34).
Bueckers will look to gel once more with Griffin as the latter works her way back into the rotation. In her first fixture since January of last year, the Ossining, New York native posted three points, four rebounds and two assists in 11 minutes off the bench.
