Roach, in his freshman year in high school (2016-17), averaged 11.1 points per game. His sophomore season saw him averaging 15.2 points, helping lead St. Paul VI to a 33-4 record and a VISAA championship. However, his junior year was cut short due to a torn ACL suffered during a scrimmage, which sidelined him for the rest of the season.

Standing at 6 feet 2 inches (188 cm) and weighing 180 pounds (82 kg), Roach possesses a wingspan of 6 feet 3 inches. In 2020, Roach committed to Duke University over offers from North Carolina and Kentucky. During his four-year tenure with the Blue Devils, he played over 130 games, starting in 108. The Leesburg, Virginia native averaged 11.3 points, 3.1 assists, and 0.9 steals per game. In his senior year, Roach averaged a career-high 14 points per game while shooting an impressive 42.9% from beyond the arc. He served as the team captain during both his junior and senior seasons and played a crucial role in Duke's successful campaigns, including reaching the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament during his final season. In April 2024, Roach announced his decision to transfer to Baylor University for his fifth and final year of NCAA eligibility. At Baylor, Roach hit a buzzer-beater three-pointer that led the team to a double-overtime victory against St. John's.
