Jerome Tang’s Contract

Tang was named the Kansas State Wildcats' new head coach in March 2022, and they reached a six-year, $14.1 million agreement, or $2.1 million annually. It included several incentives, which Tang earned in the 2022-23 season for the Wildcats’ remarkable March Madness run.

But in September 2023, Tang and Kansas agreed to a new seven-year contract, worth $23.1 million, that replaced the previous one. According to the terms of the new deal, Tang will receive $3 million for the current season and $100,000 in raises per year, for a total of $3.6 million for the 2029–2030 season. After the following four seasons, he will also receive a $200,000 retention incentive.

The following is the breakdown of Tang's rewards for March Madness:

  • $25,000 for a bid to the NCAA Tournament

  • $37,500 for making it to the Round of 32

  • $50,000 for the Sweet 16

  • $100,000 for the Elite Eight

  • $200,000 for the Final Four

  • $600,000 for taking home the National Championship.

Other bonuses that he can receive are as follows:

  • $10,000 for a postseason NIT bid

  • $10,000 for making it to the NIT Final Four

  • $15,000 for winning the NIT championship

  • $15,000 for placing in the top 25 of the final AP or USA Today poll

  • $50,000 for winning the Big 12 championship (either regular season or tournament)

  • $25,000 for being named Big 12 Coach of the Year

  • $50,000 for being named National Coach of the Year

Given that Tang's buyout is currently $5 million, organizations attempting to entice him away may be greatly discouraged. The buyout, meanwhile, might be justified for some schools given his track record of success as a coach.
