Junior guard Kailyn Gilbert delivered a standout performance off the bench, outscoring all North Carolina Central players as No. 7 LSU secured its ninth victory of the season with a commanding 131-44 win on Sunday at the Maravich Center.
Gilbert wowed the Baton Rouge crowd of 10,245 with her season-high 19 points, three rebounds, four steals and a block in 22 minutes. She shot an efficient 8-of-12 from the field, including 1-of-2 from beyond the arc, and converted both free throws.
The third-year guard was one of 10 Tigers to score in double figures. Flau’Jae Johnson led the team with 22 points and four blocks, while Aneesah Morrow notched her seventh straight double-double, contributing 17 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and three assists.
Sa’Myah Smith added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Mikaylah Williams, Jersey Wolfenbarger, Jada Richard and Mjracle Sheppard each finished with 10 points.
LSU’s defense was relentless, forcing 33 turnovers, including 23 steals, which led to 53 points. The Tigers dominated in the paint, scoring 78 points. Morgan Callahan was the sole bright spot for NC Central, leading her team with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Kim Mulkey Achieves 100th Win at LSU
The victory marked Kim Mulkey’s 100th career win as LSU coach and brought the Tigers within two points of their all-time single-game scoring record.
LSU outscored NC Central 105-26 over the final three quarters after a competitive first quarter in which the Eagles trailed by just eight points, 26-18. The Tigers then shut out the Eagles 37-0 in the second quarter, holding them to 0-for-12 shooting from the field and 0-for-8 combined from the 3-point line and free throw line, leading 63-18 at halftime.
Reflecting on the milestone, Mulkey said:
"Throughout my career I’ve been blessed to coach players who believe in our system and believe in what we do. Coming to LSU is not any different than when I was at Baylor for 20-plus years. The kids have to believe in you, they have to let you coach them, and all of those wins belong to them."
Mulkey’s impact at LSU has been transformative. In her first season (2021-22), she led the Tigers to a 26-6 record—the greatest turnaround by a first-year SEC coach—and hosted first- and second-round NCAA Tournament games.
The following year, she guided LSU to its first national championship with a 34-2 record. Last season, the Tigers reached the Elite Eight with a 31-6 record. This season, LSU’s 9-0 start has added another milestone to Mulkey’s storied career.
LSU will host unranked Stanford next on Thursday.
