Brooks's coaching journey began as an assistant coach at Virginia Military Institute, followed by stints at James Madison for the women's and men’s basketball teams. In December 2002, he was named interim coach of James Madison women’s basketball before taking a full-time role on March 21, 2003.
Brooks remained at JMU for 14 successful seasons and was named CAA Coach of the Year for a fourth time during his final season. Brooks compiled an overall record of 337-122, making him the winningest coach in the program’s history. In 2016, he joined Virginia Tech and helped the program to their first ACC tournament championship in 2023. Under his leadership, the Hokies enjoyed eight consecutive winning seasons and made four straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
