Prior to joining the University of Kansas in 2022, he played at Texas Tech University from 2019 to 2022. In his five year college career, McCullar, who plays the shooting guard position averaged 11 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game.

Born on March 15, 2001, in San Antonio, Texas, McCullar attended Karen Wagner High School where he earned a four-star rating. McCullar had an outstanding junior season averaging 16.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game but missed out on the playoffs due an injury to his tibia. Nevertheless, he continued developing during his college years and was named First-team All-Big 12 in 2024 and Big 12 All-Defensive Team in 2023.
