At the two-minute mark of overtime during LSU's 94-88 win against Stanford last Dec. 5, guard Kailyn Gilbert rose up and knocked down a jumper, to LSU coach Kim Mulkey's delight. This extended the Tigers' lead to six, 88-82, at the time and contributed to the junior's 25 points off the bench.
As the ball found the bottom of the net, Mulkey was seen frantically reacting to the play, even swinging her arms in happiness while screaming to the crowd.
The unique sequence could only be produced by Mulkey, who is known for her polarizing reactions. This prompted current LSU star Flau'jae Johnson to jokingly raise a concern about her mentor's behavior.
"Mulkey gone hit a ref one day," she captioned.
There was a lot to celebrate for Kim Mulkey and LSU. Johnson contributed heftily to the win, finishing with 21 points and six assists. The huge win gives the Tigers their 10th straight win of the season and remain undefeated.
Mulkey and her team will go for their 11th victory on Sunday, Dec. 8, against the Grambling State Tigers.
Kim Mulkey praises Kailyn Gilbert after Stanford performance
Gilbert played 34 minutes against Stanford and was the only player from the bench who had double-digit playing time. This led to her scoring the second-most in the Dec. 5 win with 25 points while also producing four assists, a steal, and a block.
During her postgame press conference, Kim Mulkey praised the junior transfer from Arizona's performance.
“KG just — she’s deceptively quick. She looks like sometimes she’s not playing hard or going faster or as fast as she can, and then all of a sudden she’s got that little explosive step to get in the paint and make things happen. I thought, again, her on-ball defense was good.”
“We are certainly happy she’s at LSU. I say that every press conference,” Mulkey said per LSU Wire.
On the campaign, Gilbert is averaging 11.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and two steals. If she can keep her play consistent, she might just find more minutes under the 2023 NCAA Champion coach's system.
