Mackenzie Mgbako is a small forward for the Indiana Hoosiers, as of 2024. Mgbako hails from Gladstone, New Jersey. He was born on November 18, 2004. Mgbako attended Gill St. Bernard's School, where head coach Jason Harrigan was in charge, and then transferred to Roselle Catholic High School, which was under the guidance of head coach Dave Boff. In 2023, Mgbako was selected for the McDonald's All-American Boys Game, the 2023 Jordan Brand Classic, and the 2023 Nike Hoop Summit.

After graduating in 2023 as a five-star recruit, Mgbako originally intended to attend Duke University, but he ultimately decided to enroll at Indiana University, Bloomington. According to 247Sports rankings, the New Jersey native from Roselle Catholic was ranked eighth in the 2023 class. During the 2023–24 season, Mgbako participated in 33 games. He scored double digits in 16 of those games. He averaged 12.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 0.4 steals by the end of the season. He was also named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and won the 2024 Big Ten Freshman of the Year award.
