Mark Montgomery, born on April 1, 1970, is the head coach of the Detroit Mercy Titans in the Horizon League. He was hired as the 23rd coach in the program’s history and most recently concluded his role as an assistant coach for Michigan State University. A four-year letter winner with Michigan State, Montgomery was part of the 1990 Big Ten Championship team and concluded his career as an all-time leader in games played (126).

Following his collegiate career, Montgomery played professional football in Germany, Lithuania, and Sweden for four years before embarking on his coaching journey with Central Michigan. He spent four years with the program before returning to MSU during the 2001-2002 season.

For the next nine seasons, Montgomery led the Spartans to three Final Fours in 2005, 2009, and 2010. In 2011, he earned his first role as the head coach for Northern Illinois and led the program to new heights in the next 10 seasons. Montgomery led a 124–170 record and his 124 wins were the third-most in the school’s history. Mark was eventually fired in 2021 and returned to Michigan State for his second stint after spending the second half of the 2020-21 season with Detroit Mercy. He moved into an assistant coaching role and joined Tom Izzo’s staff with whom who already spent 10 seasons during his first spell. After three seasons, Montgomery was hired as the new head coach at Detroit Mercy in 2024.
