Ultimately, Johnson chose to commit to the Ohio State Buckeyes to play collegiate basketball.

Johnson transferred to the South Carolina Gamecocks following his season at Ohio State. Johnson led the Gamecocks to their first tournament berth since 2017 and was nominated to the second team all-SEC at the end of the 2023–24 season, starting 33 games and averaging 14.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. As of December 2024, Johnson re-joined Ohio State for his senior year and recorded 74 points, 21 rebounds and 18 assists.
