Cunningham initially started his high school basketball career at Gill St. Bernard High School before moving to Southern California Academy. His early performances earned him recognition as one of the top recruits in the class of 2024. He was ranked as the No. 43 overall recruit by 247Sports, No. 50 by On3, and No. 62 by ESPN. In 2022, Cunningham was briefly ranked as the No. 1 overall recruit in ESPN's class of 2024 rankings. Cunningham played for the NY Renaissance program in the Nike EYBL Circuit, where he averaged 11.6 points per game as a junior. He also competed for Rolling Loud in Overtime Elite, averaging 13.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game.
