Rutgers Scarlet Knights freshman Dylan Harper posted the school's first triple-double since 41 years ago in 1983 as Rutgers crushed the Columbia Lions 91-62 on Monday in their first game back from the Christmas break.
The Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, native finished with an all-around stat line of 16 points, 11 rebounds, 12 assists, three steals and a block in 32 minutes. He also shot the ball well, missing only four shots out of his 10 attempts, three of which came from the 3-point line.
Several fans reacted positively as Harper continues to be neck-in-neck with teammate Ace Bailey and Duke's Cooper Flagg on who will be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA draft.
"Goat. Best player in the draft easily," one fan replied.
"A little Jalen Rose, a little James Harden, a little Jalen Brunson," another said, comparing Harper to NBA standouts.
"He should be the #1 pick," a user responded.
"Damnnn he's really making his name," another user posted.
As Harper continues to build on his NBA draft stock, it is also translating into wins for Rutgers (8-5, 1-1 Big Ten). He averages 23.3 points, which is third in the nation this season; 4.8 rebounds; 4.5 assists; and 1.0 blocks as the heart of Big Ten play nears.
Fittingly, Harper's 10th assist was to Bailey, who scored down low in the paint off from the feed.
With the budding chemistry between the two despite individually working on their respective draft stock, the Scarlet Knights could see more wins come their way as they gun for victory No. 9 on Thursday against the Indiana Hoosiers (10-3, 1-1).
Roy Hinson recorded Rutgers' last triple-double before Dylan Harper
It's been 41 years since the Rutgers Scarlet Knights saw a triple-double recorded from their squad. The last one to ever do so was center Roy Hinson, who had 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Rhode Island in March 1983.
Hinson was selected as the 20th pick in the 1983 NBA draft and carved out an eight-year career with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets. In due time, Harper has the potential to even surpass that when he gets into the league.
